We are seeking a Chief Engineer who, in close consultation with the Manager of Operations, will oversee the maintenance and operation of critical technical infrastructure within the data centers.
The Chief Engineer will be responsible for managing and guiding the local engineering team, ensuring all mechanical and electrical systems operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with company standards and procedures. This role plays a key part in maintaining uptime, implementing preventive maintenance schedules, and supporting continuous improvement across all technical processes.
Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance
- Ensure safe, effective, and efficient delivery of planned maintenance in accordance with all company standards and procedures.
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise all electrical and mechanical activities on-site, leveraging competent contractor and vendor resources with strong attention to quality.
- Oversee and approve all Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for work conducted within the data center.
- Ensure all contractor/vendor work is properly logged and executed in accordance with approved procedures.
- Plan and implement customer-requested work in a timely manner, keeping both the customer and Manager of Operations informed.
- Monitor and respond promptly to alarms, critical situations, and emergencies in accordance with the emergency response plan.
- Lead initiatives to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance operational reliability without compromising uptime.
Administration & Compliance
- Administer all completed work in accordance with established processes and the Planned Preventive Maintenance Schedule.
- Inform the Manager of Operations of performed work, issues, and noteworthy items.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting of all incidents and safety inspections.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Translate company goals and KPIs into actionable objectives for the local team.
- Lead, coach, and develop team members to improve performance and technical expertise.
- Conduct regular meetings with the Manager of Operations and peers to review progress, share best practices, and align on operational goals.
- Foster professional relationships with suppliers, partners, and contractors to maintain high standards and reliable collaboration.
- Oversee and lead CAB (Change Advisory Board) meetings for operational planning and risk assessment.
Emergency & Safety
- Ensure adherence to safety standards and site-specific emergency procedures.
- Regularly inspect emergency equipment and report results to the Manager of Operations.
- Maintain strict control over access to restricted areas and ensure the safeguarding of customer data and equipment.
- Provide on-call support outside normal working hours for emergencies and critical incidents.
Job requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (HBO level) or equivalent in Electrical, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in a data center or other mission-critical environment.
- Proven experience managing maintenance and operations of electrical and mechanical systems, including transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, RPP units, chillers, and CRAC/CRAH units.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- VCA VOL (Safety for Operational Supervisors) certification or willingness to obtain it.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (Dutch is a plus).
- Proficient computer skills (MS Office).
