No. Most UK data centre technician roles ask for a Level 3 electrical or mechanical qualification, a completed apprenticeship or equivalent trade background. Engineering degrees matter for design and commissioning routes, not for the technician path. Experience in critical environments counts for more than the qualification title.

For electrical roles, the 18th Edition (BS 7671) comes up in almost every listing, with City and Guilds 2391 inspection and testing as a common desirable. Authorised Person status for HV and LV is the credential that lifts pay most. For site access, CSCS and ECS. For leadership, SMSTS or SSSTS.

In most cases, yes. CSCS is the common site access and competency check across UK construction, and data centre projects apply it across trades, engineering and construction leadership. The card type depends on your occupation and qualification level. A CSCS application needs a pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test plus evidence of your qualification.

SMSTS is for people who manage construction work. SSSTS is for people who supervise it. Site Managers, Construction Managers and Project Managers need SMSTS. Foremen, supervisors and team leaders need SSSTS. SMSTS runs over five days, SSSTS over two.

Operational sites run 24 hours, so shift work is normal. Four on, four off rotating days and nights is the most common pattern, with 12 hour shifts. Construction and commissioning roles work standard site hours. Ask about the pattern before you accept, because it changes the real value of the salary.

Some do, mostly the hyperscale operators and the larger main contractors, and mostly for permanent engineering and management roles. Contract roles almost never come with sponsorship. If you need a visa, say so at the start so we only put you forward for roles where it is realistic.

Often, yes. Many UK data centres serve financial, government or defence tenants and require BPSS level screening before you get a badge: identity, right to work, five year employment history and a basic criminal record check. Some sites go further. Have your employment history dated and ready, because gaps slow the process down.

If you work in an electrical role, yes. CSCS covers general construction site access. ECS is the electrotechnical equivalent and UK data centre projects expect electrical personnel to hold it. The two are not interchangeable.

Since 2021 the client decides whether a contract role is inside or outside IR35, and most large data centre clients now default to inside, meaning tax is deducted at source through an umbrella company or agency payroll. Ask how the role is classified before comparing day rates, because an inside rate and an outside rate are not the same money.
